[faq] location, location, location

a good location can make a world of difference when photographing people! it can add to the overall emotion of the photo, can provide for great aesthetics, gives contrast, and reflect the light or even block it if needed!! picking a location is as important as picking the time of day and your wardrobe for the day. the thing is, and i know this all too well, where and what is the best location?

a nice park is popular and the beach is always a great choice. especially when the sun is two hours away from sunset and you get some lovely dreamy light. so romantic. but i feel like, sometimes, people default to these choices because they can't visualize how other less obvious locations would look for photos! so, i went out a while ago with my favourite "models" to do a little location scouting and photograph some non-obvious spaces that i think would make ideal photo shoot locations for weddings, engagements and portrait sessions!!

you'll probably recognize the first location, it's the curling rink building in st. stephen. i walk by this building everyday when i take my dog for a walk and i love it for photos!!!

this building is great because it acts a natural reflector and pops light in to the gorgeous face of esther who is standing across from the building in front of a random fence.

and around back of the curling club building there is even more opportunity for some great photos...

infusing your photos with nature doesn't mean you need to head over to dover hill or the ganong nature park!! right on the corner of hawthorne and union streets in st. stephen, there is a little patch of something pretty that is ideal for photos!!

there are a lot of great looking, and colourful, doors and buildings in st. stephen that are ideal backdrops for photos. steps, long buildings, beams and other architectural details inspire the photographer looking to be artistic with angles and poses! i love this building on milltown boulevard for this very reason [notice where the car is parked in relation to how i photographed the space; don't let "obstructions" like this discourage you from the using the space!!]

and what about that random tree by the side of the road that you really love? it's perfect!

i hope this is helpful. and thank you to my two beautiful models, lisa and esther!! you were ab fab. let's do this again sometime!!

love & sunshine,
shannon-may
