faq: what should i wear?

the most common asked question i receive when booking a portrait session is: "what should i wear?"

i actually enjoy answering this question because it gets me thinking about the photo session, the location we will be shooting at, the composition of the photos i have stored in my brain, and the hopes i have for the final outcome of a photo session. i love LOVE color, layered garments (ie. scarves), casual sophistication, clean cut and tailored pieces and coordination but loath the matchey- matchey looks! but i am not the one having my picture taken... thus my response is more often than not something like this:

"the most important thing to keep in mind when choosing clothing for your photo session is that you feel good in what you are wearing. that you choose an outfit (or outfits) that you want to be photographed in." or "best the best version of your everyday self!"

other tidbits of information i suggest is to keep in mind when choosing your outfit or your families "look" includes:
- the location (background, fixtures, textures) in which you have chosen to be photographed;  you want to pop against the "wallpaper" not blend in!
- black and white are fine but best when layered with other pieces, and only if these tones work well with your coloring.
- have fun! bring a hat, a scarf, a coat... it takes two seconds to add a layer or an accessory and can make a huge difference in the photograph and the way you pop against the scenery!

also, check out fellow photographer kathleen frank's great discussion on what to wear for your portrait session!!

please feel free to continue emailing me your questions.
